I buy sodium chlorite flakes from the chemical store.com It may be more expensive than Amazon, but I don't care, I know it's the best stuff, pure. I bought a 5 pound bucket for 85. (4 years ago)
I weigh out 28 grams and then mix into 1/3 cup distilled water in glass container, stir until dissolved with plastic spoon (approx. 5 minutes). I store in a high grade plastic bottle with plastic lid (not metal lid). I keep in the refrigerator.
Seems to me that if you need to warm up the solution then your water isn't pure distilled. And that means it won't work.

Dawna, if room temperature is low, it takes longer to get the flakes to go into solution. So, heating helps in that situation. I make my own distilled water and it is pure, but I don't live in the tropics, so I heat it.Seems to me that if you need to warm up the solution then your water isn't pure distilled. And that means it won't work.
Are you saying that MMS made with non-distilled water won't work? Why not? Is that your experience?

Even slightly hard water will ruin the chlorite, it doesn't take much.
Once I put a little really hard water into flakes, the chlorite sucked up all the water and it bound together to form one solid rock. Surprisingly a day later - I then soaked the rock in distilled water it turned to liquid. Hey this would make a good magic trick!
You should bust up the flakes into little pieces to shorten the time to dissolve. Just roll a bottle over them.

I have always used distilled water to make MMS, but what if one does not have DW, then what? I think I will try making a small batch using our well water, which is full of minerals and see what happens.
It is not recommended to physically shock NaCLO2 flakes as they could ignite. So, I won't try to make them smaller with a rolling pin or bottle.
Your MMS recipe is off a bit from Steve's formula shown above. 1/3 cup of water is 79 ml or 79 grams. Using the formula that would result in 31 grams of NaCLO2.

So, throw in another flake to get it spot on. Sure beats all the measuring and calculating, and I just think mms shouldn't intimidate us math challenged people. (:
I break up my flakes with a plastic fork while I stir it. But I don't make large quantities.
Seems like a rolling pin going slowly would be just fine to break it up.
I absolutely would not drink any mms made with any other water than distilled, and I buy it, it's cheap, I won't take any risk with this part of the recipe, as to swallow small rocks could hurt or kill your kidneys.
I often wonder when people say it doesn't work if they are using distilled water. Any other water simply won't work (according to Jim and Andreas back in 2012).

Importance of Stomach Acid
Published on: April 5, 2026
You have heard it said, “You are what you eat”, but in my opinion, it’s more accurate to say “You are what you absorb.” Stomach acid plays an important role in what nutrients you absorb from the food you eat. When someone is deficient in stomach acid the vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and other nutrients …
